Our Turkeys

At Winter Wren Farm, our Heritage Turkeys are raised naturally on our woodland pastures, their diet supplemented with non-GMO and organic grains, as well as fruits and vegetables from our organic practise gardens.

Raising our turkeys on a pasture-based system is core to our beliefs in producing nutritious, moist, flavourful tasting birds, without the use of vaccinations, antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, or herbicides. Our Heritage Turkeys happily forage throughout our woodland pastures from dawn till dusk, as nature intended. Our feeding program along with the  eight to nine months it takes to raise these slow growing Heritage turkeys outdoors on pasture, makes our turkeys much more expensive to produce than the hybrid, rapidly growing meat turkey, free ranged on shavings in a barn. Unlike the typical meat turkey that is raised for the Thanksgiving and Christmas table, by most large factory farms and small- scale commercial turkey farmers, our Heritage Turkeys are self-sustainable, breeding, foraging and roosting naturally as turkeys have done for thousands of years. No artificial insemination, growth hormones or hybridized breeding is used on our farm. Our Heritage Turkeys can attain flight speeds of 55 miles per hour and run in short bursts at speeds up to 20 miles per hour!  A fattened modern day meat turkey can barely lift itself off the ground at four months of age.

Although you’ll find our Heritage breed turkeys to be leaner , with less breast meat and more densely muscled than the  genetically modified supermarket meat turkey, you can take comfort knowing that your fine holiday turkey was raised naturally. Their meat is rich and satisfying without gamey notes, is fall apart tender, with an equal ratio of light to dark meat. The delicious rich Heritage turkey flavour and texture, creates a unique and flavourful dining experience.
